An Open Letter from Yankee Ingenuity

To: Monday night dancers
Date: December 4, 2008
Re: Changes in the Monday Night Concord Scout House Contra Dance

Yankee Ingenuity’s Monday night dance at the Concord Scout House has been going continuously for about 30 years. For many of those years we were a local band living not very far from the Scout House. But things have changed over time. Mary Lea moved to Brattleboro, Vermont some 18 years ago, and a few years ago Peter Barnes moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts. It has become increasingly difficult for them to continue making a regular commitment to Monday nights. After much consideration, they have decided to no longer be part of the Monday night dance production, and thus Yankee Ingenuity will no longer sponsor the dance after December, 2008.

The Monday Night Dance will not end though! A newly formed steering committee including Jack O’Connor, Cal Howard, local musician Mark Simos and other interested musicians, callers and dancers are working to continue the long tradition of the Monday night dance. The committee aims to increase participation by local musicians, especially the many fine younger players in the Boston area, and to refine and develop the distinctive character of the Monday night dance within the greater New England contra dance community. This next chapter of the dance will be building on the dedicated work of Yankee Ingenuity, its guest musicians, callers and dancers over the past three decades. The Monday Night Steering Committee will send out a letter soon, providing more details about the new evolution of the Monday Night Concord Scout House Contra Dance. If you would like to contribute ideas, energy and/or volunteer sweat equity to help sustain and transform the dance in the coming months, check the website www.mondaycontras.com, our new home for information about the Monday dance. You can also join these Yahoo groups:

We hope you will continue to support our dance in the coming year. Please encourage your friends to attend.

Respectfully,
Yankee Ingenuity
(Peter Barnes, Cal Howard, Mary Lea, and Jack O’Connor)
